A Nation Full of Anxiety

It would be impossible to even measure all of the reasons that people in this nation are plagued with anxiety. Nothing is simple but rather stressful, the workplace has become more complex and tougher to compete in, divorce rates are staggering, more and more children are forced to take on more responsibilities because those families that have managed to remain together need both parents income to survive. This has left more problems with teens that have to face crises never intended for them. These teens will grow into adulthood that places them as perfect candidates for the future generation of those having to deal with panic attacks.

More homes than ever are in foreclosure, the unemployment rate is high, the nation is on the brink of a recession, people are still recovering from terrorist attacks from 9/11 which has left no one feeling totally safe from the threat of terrorism, weather patterns are almost unrecognizable and certainly unpredictable. Drug and alcohol use is prominent, crime rates soar, cancer is a word that stings the souls of every person and people are losing loved ones to death everyday.

Taking all of these factors into consideration is it any wonder why so many have to deal with anxiety and panic disorder, certainly not. Anxiety disorders are the most common of all of the mental health disorders. The stress builds up and certain people compounded with prevailing genetic factors fill a nation that is dependent on anti depressants and anti anxiety medication. Often people’s coping mechanisms are depleted and as the stress grows and people feel more helpless, anxiety attacks are as equal as the common cold.

Medications that are prescribed for anxiety disorders do not correct the problem forever but for only as long as the person takes them. Once a person stops taking the medication the anxiety symptoms will return so the medication really is not much more than putting a band aid on the problem and for some that is good enough, but not for everyone. Then the alternatives are psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. These when used together can have very positive results. They can enable a person to learn to deal with stress in different ways rather than to rely on medicine.

It is probably a very good idea to seek prevention of anxiety and panic disorder rather than waiting until it surfaces and then requires a lifetime of medication or years of therapy. While it is true, there is no real prevention for these disabling disorders there are certain ways that can reduce at least the number of attacks that occur. Simply avoiding such things as caffeine and alcohol will help. Practicing exposure therapy and limiting triggers is also a way to reduce a lot of anxiety. Continuing or beginning mental health counseling and taking advantage of self help and relaxation techniques will greatly benefit in the reduction of future anxiety and panic attacks.
