When a person’s anxiety attacks come to a point where they require some type of intervention many people will turn to prescription anxiety medication but for others that is not the answer. People understand the effects that most of these medications can cause such as insomnia or sleeplessness, sexual difficulties, including lack of desire or the inability to climax, weight gain, nightmares, or dry mouth. These are just some of the side effects that are often very unpleasant.
There are other ways to manage anxiety besides through prescription drugs but unfortunately many are not aware of these options or the relief that they can provide. In many instances, these other vehicles to relieve anxiety are often even more effective. Relaxation techniques practiced regularly can be extremely beneficial. There are audio tapes or CD’s that can be purchased that are really so simple but at the same time so very powerful.
The tapes provide usually a three part exercise that includes slow and deep breathing exercises, muscle relaxation exercises and visualization. If you allow yourself to practice these exercises a couple of times per day, you will notice a significant change for the better. They also equip you to use these breathing techniques when faced with a situation when a panic or anxiety attack is coming on. When you begin to feel the tingles coming up your spine, you notice your breathing has become labored, maybe your throat feels like it is closing up, and your palms get all sweaty you will be able to put to use what you have learned.
A relaxation audio would require you to go to a place where you feel comfortable, can relax and will not be disturbed. Lie down; make sure that you are going to be able to devote your attention solely to this exercise. It will start with a very pleasant voice that instructs you on how to manage your breathing by breathing in deep through your nose and exhaling even deeper through your mouth. Usually this is repeated a few times in a row to make sure that your breathing is coming from your abdomen rather than from your chest.
Next you would engage in a muscle relaxation exercise. If you suffer from anxiety or panic then you know that there is always a knot somewhere in your body where most of your tension likes to hang out. Starting at the tip of your toes and working through your whole body you will tense each muscle; hold it and then release until you are now in a state of relaxed breathing and complete muscle relaxation. The audio exercise normally ends with a visualization exercise that takes you on a mental journey where you can visualize where the speaker takes you to a wonderful waterfall or somewhere beautiful which is the reward at the end of your journey. When practiced regularly, these techniques can offer much help to those who suffer from anxiety or panic disorder.
