There may come a time when your anxiety or panic attacks have spiraled out of control and in order to manage the symptoms there comes a time when medication may be the only answer. There are many types of medication available, some of the most popular include Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Prozac, BuSpar, Xanex, and Valium, although Valium and Prozac are more old school treatments in comparison to the medications that are available today.
The medications that are used to treat anxiety and panic disorders are in different classifications such as antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors SSRI’s), and anti anxiety medications. The SSRI’s are generally the front line treatment for panic and anxiety and these are mainly Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Prozac, and Lexapro. Klonopin, Xanex, and Ativan are anti anxiety medications that are also used in the early stages of treatment but do have addictive properties to them so they should be monitored closely.
Along with the medication it is also recommended that psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and medication be used in conjunction with each other for the best results and that the medication begins in lower doses that are intermittently increased. Until recently most physicians treated panic and anxiety with nothing more than benzodiazepines which were doing nothing more when used as a stand alone treatment than masking the problem temporarily. In other words if a person were to miss a dose they could easily be right back where they started.
It is difficult to guess at which type of regimen that your doctor might opt to use to combat your anxiety disorder. Most of the time the program will be tailored to meet your individual needs. One doctor might be pro Zoloft and another may be pro Celexa, regardless the SSRI’s are all sister drugs. The newest drug to hit the market for treatment of anxiety is duloxetine, which is sold under the trade name of Cymbalta. Again though these drugs have the same properties and work pretty much the same.
Some people decide that they may opt for natural measures that act like a medication but are composed of all natural ingredients. These require no prescription and are usually available at health food or vitamin stores. Ashwagandha has compounds that have anti-stress properties. It helps the body adapt to stress because it calms and revitalizes the nervous system and it assists in muscle relaxation. Gamma-Amino butyric Acid (GABA) is the most crucial inhibitory neurotransmitters in the brain. When the brain gets too excited it must be balanced with inhibition. L-Theanine has psychoactive properties. It also promotes relaxation without any side effects of sleepiness. Herbal remedies known as ginseng help fight off stress naturally. L-Tyrosine helps form three important neurotransmitters: dopamine, ephrine, and serotonin. This is also known to help with depression and anxiety in a short period of time. The good thing about using natural ingredients to alleviate anxiety symptoms is that there are normally no unpleasant side effects to deal with.
