Maybe you are driving in your car, grocery shopping or even fast asleep and suddenly you are overcome with the feeling that your throat is closing up and you can not breathe, your heart is pounding, almost like it is coming out of your chest, your trembling, sweating, and perhaps even nauseous, you may even feel like you are about to die. Odds are that you have just experienced an anxiety attack or a panic attack, but why?
Anxiety disorder, which is also often compromised of panic disorder as well, is becoming more and more common. The number of people that are taking medications for anxiety disorder is staggering. Life in general causes feelings of anxiousness but when it comes to a point where it could be jeopardizing your health or interfering with the quality of your life then there has to be some type of formal help so that you can cope.
First, you must look at the root causes of anxiety. Many complex factors are responsible for the development of anxiety disorders. Basically, a combination of such factors as your brain chemistry, genetics, personality, and your environment are responsible for laying the ground work for this disorder. This however is only one layer, then factor in financial problems, work related stress, the death of a loved one, marital problems, a serious illness, etc and you now have added another layer that contributes to anxiety.
Just one of these factors can change everyday anxiety into a full blown anxiety disorder. It is never just one specific factor that is responsible for a person’s anxiety but rather a combination of factors that are interrelated and impact each other. The blame for anxiety disorder must be equally shared between physical and environmental triggers that are combined. There is a lot of psychological controversy still surrounding the research of this disorder as to the causes of it but most do embrace the concept that once the genetic groundwork is laid then how a person handles the hardballs in life that are thrown their way will determine how they will handle their anxiety and how it will manifest.
When anxiety becomes a problem and starts to affect your quality of life then the culprit can be a mental or physical condition, it could be the effects of a drug that you might be taking, or a combination of these. It is often a good idea to seek the help of your doctor so that he can rule out if your anxiety is being caused by an underlying medical condition.
Finally, another cause of anxiety disorder could be from the use of certain illicit drugs, mainly cocaine or amphetamines. If a person is coming off of or withdrawing from opiates, benzodiazepines, or barbituates then they will definitely experience a high degree of anxiety however that does not mean that once the withdrawal has subsided that the anxiety will still be a relevant factor.
